Puppies for Christmas: On Second Thought…

Just a holiday reminder….as a rescue organization we are aware that January is the highest rated month for abandoned animals and animal intakes at shelters, etc.

“Approximately 4 million adoptable pets are killed each year, including millions of puppies. 25% of pets in shelters are purebred.” -Adoptapet.com

Families may think it’s cute to get their kids a puppy and that’s not always a bad thing, but just keep in mind the fact that the excitement may wear off….and that a purebred chews on furniture just as good as a mutt.  Always rescue rather than buy if you’re going to add a family pet.

If ‘surprising’ someone with a dog or puppy, the best bet might be to go together and be sure the person is ready for the work involved.  It is a long commitment.  Get them a gift card to Petsmart or someplace similar if you know they’re about to get a new pet, this will come in handy to buy supplies and food.

Side Note:  Overpopulation will never cease if we as consumers keep ‘demanding’, they will keep ‘breeding’, no matter what it takes or how it affects the animals.  Some mama dogs have a litter from age 1, every year until age 8.  They never get relief.

When adding a new dog/puppy/cat/kitten to your family….be ready for the commitment, the devotion it takes as they are a member of your family for many years to come.  Timing is everything!

and on that note… Happy Holidays!!
